This work investigates how new elements in each genre of French movies affect the reception and their success in German-speaking countries The thesis indicates that French movies have become more popluar in Germany, Austria and Switzerland due to new elements in their genres and the modified reception of the recipients. The analysis refers to French movies launched for cinema and particularly movies produced 100 percent by French companies. Furthermore it refers to movies with a French majority participation plus a co-production with other countries. Furthermore, this work also analyses the developement of movie attendance and the market share of French movies in each of the three German-speaking countries over a period of 20 years (1993-2013). To determine which genres are popular and which kinds of movies affect the reception of the audience, a top 10 hitlist of the most popular French movies in each country is generated. A further point is dedicated to possible impediments that hinders the realization of the full potential of French movies. In summary, French movies found themself a successful niche by producing comedies with socialrealist tendencies and have therefore strenghtend their popularity. Whereas US-films reduced their market share in Europe, European movies correspond more with the taste of the German-speaking audience.
