Comparison of different extraction methods for the ethanolic extraction of pre-processed P. tricornutum biomass

  • In an attempt to increase economical sustainability of algae-based purification processes, pre-processed P. tricornutum biomass was subjected to different ethanolic extraction methods using rotary evaporator, shaker flask and Soxhlet. Extracts were characterized regarding the contents of typical high value diatom products eicosapentaenoic acid (long-chain omega-3 fatty acid) and fucoxanthin (bioactive allenic carotenoid). As a result, kinetic models of ethanolic extraction were proposed.
